In the beginning, there was …

Sounds rather biblical, doesn’t it? Don’t worry, organised religion is not for me. It does have its good points, but I will talk more about that another time.

Most people who think along the lines that I do, believe that how this thing we are all involved in, called “Life on planet Earth”, started with a big bang. The Big Bang theory is a popularly endorsed scientific theory about how the universe began a whopping 13.8 billion years ago, and personally, I agree with those fabulous scientists. I am not going to explain the theory, because for this purpose it isn’t really important. But I do want to let you know what the universe is made of. Ever wondered what it is you look at when you stare at the night sky? … Yes? Good. The reliable people at NASA have discovered that only 4.6% of the entire universe is made up of atoms. That, my friends, is not much at all – minuscule even! The rest has been detected as being a combination of dark energy and dark matter. It’s important to understand that even those very clever scientists haven’t yet really agreed on what that “dark” stuff is.

Now for a mini science lesson (eep!).  Back in science class, if you sat toward the front of the class, you would have been taught about atoms. If you were at the back, then you probably learned many other great life lessons. Nevertheless, a good deal has changed about the theory of atoms since I was in school, waaaaaay back. However, the basics are the same – atoms are made up of really small particles, called things like electrons, neutrons and protons. Broken down even further are smaller bits called quarks, gluons (love those words) and other funny little things. Importantly, the majority of an atom is made of empty space and energy. For instance, when an atom is split, it releases a massive amount of energy for such a wee little speck. I need you to remember that it is energy which is the important part here.

In a bizarre little concept scientists call quantum physics, it is shown that atoms have a peculiar nature. Atoms are little weirdos!!! They can act as waves and particles. You can’t even pinpoint where one is at any given time. There is also this theory called non-locality, that Albert Einstein  shrugged off by calling it “spooky actions at a distance”. Non-locality shows us that objects even at large distances apart can affect each other. Like when you are thinking of someone and then they call you on the phone. Spooky indeed! There are other really cool experiments that prove this theory,  such as in the discoveries of Dr Cleve Backster who worked in the area of hypnosis. Dr Backster was able to show after connecting a plant to a polygraph machine (lie detector) that plants had feelings. He was able to demonstrate, by the reaction on the polygraph machine to certain experiments he carried out, that you could shock or scare a plant! He took the experiment further and extracted cells from a person’s mouth. With measuring devices, he was able to reveal that there was a reaction to those cells that corresponded with that person’s emotional state, even though that person was over three hundred miles away from his cells at the time. There is a great deal more scientific evidence available verifying this phenomenon that you can have a look at, which even explains how teleportation is actually possible. Wow!

This is good science and even science doesn’t totally know why atoms can do what they do. You, are made of this stuff! Your heart beats by itself, you breathe while your asleep and that neat slice you made in your hand from chopping last night’s onions will disappear all by itself. You, and all the cells and atoms that make you up, are awesome and no one really knows how this awesomeness operates. It just does.

Now remember that scientists can’t even work out why the things we can actually see before us behave the way they do. To add to this, they also haven’t discovered what the rest of the universe is really made of. From all that, it is then easy to think that there is something greater than us out there operating mission control and that anything at all in this game called Life is possible. Amazing!
